"CounterTorqueSteer" (countertorquesteer)

Hey everyone, happy Friday! Before too long, I will be in the market for an “everyday camera”. Something small enough to tote around in a bag or possibly a pocket, so I don’t have to lug around my dslr. I’d like to get something with a large sensor (such as the Ricoh GR with a 1" sensor). A prime lens is definitely not a negative to me. Does anyone here have any experience with such a camera? Any suggestions? Thanks :)

All my cinematographer friends have the Fuji x100 (or variations thereof). Killer images for a good price.
And I’d trust a cinematographer when it comes to handling and quality, because they’re usually big cry-babies about that.

I'm actually a professional editor/cameraman. I currently own a Fuji x20 and have shot with the x100. The x100 is a little big for my everyday use.

I am leaving for Japan tomorrow, and I’m taking this. Works well with an iPhone 6S - http://www.sony.net/Products/di/en…

I own the GR and it’s fantastic. It doesn’t look like much, but every control is exactly where it should be and does exactly what it should. Image quality is great, lacking only in the super shallow DOF you can get with faster lenses. Also, the GR has an APS-C sensor, not a 1".

RX100 MkIV has had my eye for a bit but then the A6300 got my attention.
There’s always the Olympus 35RC.

Just looked it over and that looks like a fantastic camera. I love wide angles and an aps-c sensor in a body that small is nuts. Main reason I’ve been more interested in the RX100 series is because I wanted something for stills and video.

Sucks that the x20 doesn’t work for you as an everyday camera. My wife has an x10 and the x20 would be the perfect camera for me if it was just a wee bit smaller.

If you can find one in a store (not easy), try it out. You’d be amazed how well built it is and how perfectly it fits in your hand. I do wish it had image stabilization, though.

Thanks for the insight. I’m not sure why I thought it had a 1". Even more reason to buy it! Are you happy with it in less than ideal lighting conditions?

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the X20. I'm just looking for something a little less conspicuous with a little bigger sensor.

No I get exactly what you want because I want the same thing. I will probably get an x20 because I love Fuji’s colors and the x10 is already pretty solid except for autofocus which I hear the x20 fixes. It’s just a hair too big. That’s why I’ve been looking at the RX100 series.
In the meantime I carry a T2i or A1 every day. Well at least I did until life got too busy. Yesterday I finally took the A1 out again for the first time in a month. It was glorious.

I’d be happy to sell you my X20 if you were really interested. I’ve gotten my use out of it. It’s in perfect working order other than the viewfinder which suffered from the infamous X20 issue where it just crapped out one day. This would obviously help you save a bit. No drops, no water damage or moisture, under 1000 shots taken. I also have a sculpted leather case to go with it. If you are interested, you can shoot me an email jskyellis@gmail.com.

I’m not there yet, unfortunately. I need more filmmaking gear. I’m thinking of selling my Zoom H4N to buy a Tascam DR60II. That and I need more light stands. And c stands. And lights. And....

I definitely understand. If you change your mind, hit me up. Because you are from Oppo, you'd get it for $200. Good luck on your gear acquisition!

Yeah, but it’s not the newest sensor on the market and it doesn’t have IS, so you may want to check out some real world examples at ISO3200 to see if you’d be happy. If not, you might be happier with something that has an f/2 or faster (and bigger).

I’ve been using an old Canon g10 for few years now as my “just take it along in case something interesting pops up” camera. It’s not fabulous at anything but it’s good enough, small enough, durable and cheap enough so I don’t think twice about bringing it along. If you are looking on the low end you can get the most current model in the series, the g16, for only $379.00 on Amazon.

Gotcha. Nice to see a fellow Jalop working in the same industry!

I was about to look up GR prices if it was full frame. APC just doesn’t do it for me anymore.

I know some with it too, I think they might also just like the old-timey look and feel of it too. Fuckin’ hipsters.

Eh, then they’d all spring for the digital b/w Leica, though.

Very true.
Although, I wouldn’t agree that a cinematographer is into it for the hipster status, thus rendering that camera useful.
(The people I’m referring to aren’t hip, either by clothes or lifestyles, rather obsessed with their work, really)
